What is better for increasing flexibility: yoga or pilates?

Question by muffinbear: What is better for increasing flexibility: yoga or pilates?
I’m getting more serious about dance and I would really like to become more flexible (better extensions, better back flexibility, etc). I would also like to strengthen my core. Should I take yoga or pilates? Both? Something else?

  1. Yoga is aimed to unite the mind, the body, and the spirit. Pilates works the whole body, emphasizing control, precision and concentration in both the mind and the body.
    Both look a slow stretching movements. Pilates has slightly more emphasis on strength. for what you are wanting, I would recommend Pilates.

  2. I would say combine them and add some traditional stretching as well. Don’t over do it by doing both programs to their complete extent. As far as traditional stretching, hold each stretch longer, for a minimum of 20 seconds. Don’t eat or drink right before stretching either. Good luck!
