Yes, Pilates work.

I’m autodidact (self-taught) so I’m always like “buy a book”.

Try a Pilates for beginners’ book, there are tons of them but the only one I have is the 2001 Kellina Stewart one and is good…I have no idea about the other books.

That book is a good introduction to Pilates, you do not need any equipment, and it is a sturdy spiral-bound book that has an easel-style system so it can stand on the floor, at eye level.

obese but want to start exercising…can I start with Pilates?

Question by huh?: obese but want to start exercising…can I start with Pilates?
Is Pilates a reasonable beginner workout for someone that hasn’t been active in a few years? I’m 5’7″ and about 250 lbs. I can walk for an hour without trouble but have very little flexibility or muscle. Is this a good place to start? If not, what is? Thanks!

You should always consult your doctor if you aren’t sure when starting a new exercise routine, but I think at least beginner’s Pilates is safe for most people. Good job on starting to want to exercise. Remember, if you don’t see results right away, don’t give up!

Q&A: Should I lose weight first and then start pilates or do both at the same time?

Question by pinkghost15: Should I lose weight first and then start pilates or do both at the same time?
Hi, I really want to lose 30lbs because I’m about 50lbs overweight. But I also want to get a really tight core like I used to have but I don’t know whether I should start running and lose the weight first and THEN start pilates for my abs and stuff or if I should do both.

Speaking from personal experience and observation over the course of many years, I can say with some certainty that anyone who commits to Pilates workouts will create a trimmer appearance, and most will lose significant weight.
Answer: Pilates is famous for creating long, lean, fit bodies. There are many ways that doing Pilates supports weight loss and a trimmer appearance:
Exercise burns calories. How many calories you burn depends on your body type and your level of exertion.
